Alfa Romeo Montreal

The Montreal is a front engined, rear wheel drive, 2+2 coupé sports car produced by the Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo from 1970 to 1977. The Montreal was first introduced as a sensational concept car representing progress in the automotive world for Canada's Centennial, Expo ‘67 World's Fair, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Alfa Romeo quickly engineered the concept using the 1.6 liter inline four cylinder from the 105 Guilia along with other current production 105 series mechanicals. The beautiful coachwork was built by Grouppo Bertone and designed by the legendary Italian stylist, Marcello Gandini.

The production car introduced 3 years later in Geneva used the chassis from the Guilia GTV, but was now powered by a 2.6 liter version of Alfa Romeo’s race proven V8 from the Tipo 33 prototype race car. The body lines were refined for production and the end result was a beautiful fast grand touring supercar.

The Montreal styling is very unique with a nonfunctional NACA duct in the hood, louvered eyebrows and flowing lines. After 7 years Montreal production ended with roughly 3,900 cars produced.

Alfa Romeo

The Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo, S.p.A. produces some of the most thrilling automobiles known to man. The company's first name is A.L.F.A. an acronym that roughly translates to a group of investors who intend on building cars. The unique badge of the cross and serpent was adopted from the crest of Milan where the factory was established.

The company was founded in 1910 after acquiring the assets of the French Darraq company, and started producing cars of its own design soon thereafter. In 1915 it acquired its last name - Romeo after Neopolitan industrialist Nicola Romeo bought the company with the intent of producing equipment for the great war.

Between the wars, was a period of great turmoil and success for the young company. Even though it was taken over by the Italian government, Alfa Romeo gained fame producing handbuilt, sophisticated automobiles for an exclusive clientele. Simultaneously Alfa Romeo achieved success in all forms of motorsport.

During the war, the company produced aero engines, before the factory was leveled by allied strategic bombing raids.

After the Second World War, Alfa Romeo picked up where it left off producing road cars using pre-war engineered engines and chassis. However, during the 1950’s production changed towards building well engineered, smaller sports cars, coupes and sedans which was the foundation for Alfa Romeo’s future.

Alfa Romeo is one of the most successful marques in racing and has been competing since its inception achieving success in every level of motorsport. During the late twenties and early thirties the blood red cars emblazoned with either the green Quadrifoglio of the factory team or the yellow and black prancing horse of the Scuderia Ferrari dominated the racing circuits of Europe. Winning prestigious races like the 24 Hours Of Le Mans, The Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio multiple times. After the war, racing successes continued with championships in Formula 1, Sports Car and Touring Car racing.

Today, Alfa Romeo is part of FIAT Chrysler, but it is still reknowned for building well engineered, sporting automobiles that any driver would appreciate.
