Volkswagen T1 Samba Bus

Volkswagen started producing the luxurious 23 window T1 Samba Bus in 1951. The bus featured eight panoramic windows on the roof and used the name Samba to differentiate this version from the normal van. Instead of a sliding door at the side the Samba had two swinging doors and a folding fabric roof. The Samba came from the factory painted in two colors with the upper part usually painted white. Volkswagen stopped producing the Samba when the T2 version of the Transporter was introduced in 1967.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen was established by the Nazi German Labor Front in 1937. The company was charged with building cars the average German could afford. Designed by the brilliant German engineer Ferdinand Porsche, the "People's Car" provided basic transportation for the new Autobahn highway system. Construction of a new factory started in May 1938 in what is now Wolfsburg. When the war ended, the heavily bombed factory was managed by the British who resumed production of the T1 Peoples Car to aid in Germany's reconstruction. By 1946, the still damaged factory was able to produce an incredible 1,000 cars a month. From these humble beginnings and with the popularity of the Type 1 Beetle, Volkswagen grew to become one of the largest automakers in the world controlling several major global brands like Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, Bugatti and Rolls Royce to name a few.
